Updated Peugeot 3008 GT-Line Road Test

OPULENT from the moment you open the door. The 2021 Peugeot 3008 GT is the pinnacle model in its mid-sized SUV range, offering class and comfort. To stand out from the crowd, it sports Chrome exterior highlights, grille and branding featuring high polished, eye catching wheels.

A new frameless grille features at the front, while gloss black side scoops and a painted treadplate are integrated with the new bumper design as standard. At the rear, the new Peugeot full LED lights include a ‘3D lion claw’ lighting signature and scrolling indicators.

The lights feature a smoked glass lens, extending the black boot strip on either side of the vehicle. A new 10-inch colour touchscreen and multi-touch technology is available across the Peugeot 3008 range, delivering increased functionality.

It turns heads with its unique look, open the door though and you’ll immerse yourself in the curved interior with a Lime Wood wrap around dash and door trim to make you feel like it was crafted just for you.

The one and only option on the GT seating wise is full grain Nappa Leather but you can opt for Black or the very sexy red(as tested), which is really quite comfortable in its marshmallowy ‘H’ pattern. The front seats are heated and they can both extend at the bottom, which is handy for those who are taller.

Exclusive to the GT in the 3008 range, a massage function offers five different options to choose from and three different intensities. Working in a 2×8 configuration, you can target an area or go for an all-round approach. It’s all part of the luxury and its exclusively for the driver.

To the right of the wheel is a series of buttons, all doing different tasks, but there’s two spaces free. We’d think a stop/start button would be a nice addition, so you can avoid navigating the touchscreen to find it if you wish to shut it off.

We’d throw a button for the electric tailgate in there too. There’s a bunch of buttons on the uniquely shaped steering wheel that Peugeot is now famous for, as well. Directly above the wheel is a lovely 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Angled towards you is a 10.0-inch high definition touchscreen, which is essentially the hub of the vehicle. You’ll need to select the screen you want using the applicable piano keys below, and from there, touch the screen for what you want.

The centre console is incredibly generous. Open the butterfly doors like that of a 7 Series and you can fit an entire 2L Bottles inside it, it’s that deep. In front of that there’s a single USB port, a large wireless phone charging pad, and the joystick-styled drive selector.

Through the USB port, you can connect your smartphone via wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth connectivity is available too. The GT comes with an exclusive, and incredible, 10-speaker Focal premium hi-fi sound system.

In the boot we have a two-position boot floor, and a very decent 591-litres of storage with the rear seats up. Lower them and that balloons to a whopping 1,670-litres.

Powered by a PSA 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 133kW of power and 250Nm of torque via an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 3008 offers good performance but is unchanged from the previous model. There are three drive modes to mess about with though, including Eco, Normal and Sport. The highlight of the latter is the fact it switches the digital cockpit from calming blue to ready-to-race red. It will hit the 100km/h mark in 8.8 seconds.

The adaptive cruise control is Great and works really well. It will bring you to a complete stop in traffic, if need be, but won’t recommence the journey without some manual prodding. It also features lane keep assist, which was spot on during testing provided you remember to always indicate.

Blind spot monitoring is also provided and letting go of the steering wheel while utilising some of the safety tech will illicit a two stage warning process, the first using visual aids and the second using sound.

For those who enjoy a long-distance drive, it’s also worth noting that the right side of the centre console features padding, providing some level of comfort for the hours you spend behind the wheel.

One other thing we noticed was a lack of GT-Line badging on the GT. Seems Peugeot has decided to drop it and change it to just plain GT, might be to make way for the GT Sport range offered in Europe which hopefully will be offered in SA soon.

The 2021 Peugeot 3008 GT is priced at R644 900, and in the case of our test vehicle, came in Pearl White with the Red Leather. There are six other options, including Artense Grey, Elixir Red, Nera Black, Pearl White, Platinum Grey and Vertigo Blue.
